New Development Officer for the Cambrian Lines: 08/08/2006

The Cambrian Railway Partnership has recently appointed a new Rail Development Officer, Gerwyn Jones, who previously worked for TraCC, the Mid Wales Transport Consortium, and Ceredigion County Council in developing and promoting sustainable transport initiatives.

Gerwyn will be based at the Railway Station in Machynlleth and the main objective of his post will be to act as an interface between the communities the Cambrian Railways serve and those responsible for such things as providing the train services, maintaining and improving infrastructure and information provision.

Gerwyn commented: "I am very aware that the Cambrian Railways have played a vital role in the development of many of the towns and villages of Mid Wales and they continue to offer a vital transport link with the wider world beyond Shrewsbury as well as providing employment both directly and indirectly in the area."

The ride on the train along the Cambrian Coast from Machynlleth to Pwllheli offers one of the most stunningly beautiful railway journeys anywhere in the UK. The Main Line from Aberystwyth to Shrewsbury provides the ideal way of accessing shopping centres, leisure amenities and international airports - what could be better than starting your holiday from your local railway station?

"With the increasing problems associated with car travel such as parking, congestion difficulties becoming eve more apparent, as well as environmental concerns, the train can often be the ideal alternative," said Gerwyn.

Over the summer months Gerwyn hopes to attend events across the areas served by the Cambrian Lines to raise awareness and promote the services as well as engaging with local people to see what the railway means to them and how it could better satisfy their needs.
