New Cycle Parking Facilities for Machynlleth Railway Station 19/06/2007

To celebrate Bike Week, June 16 - June 24, new cycle parking facilities have been installed at Machynlleth Railway Station.

The station has recently seen a steady increase in the number of customers and staff who want to access the station by bike.

Arriva Trains Wales (ATW), the Cambrian Railways Partnership (CRP) and Powys County Council (PCC) have teamed up to provide and install the new stands that can store up to 10 bikes.

Anthea Jones, PCC Cycling Development Officer, who provided the bike stands, said "It's great that in celebrating Bike Week PCC working with ATW have been able to further enhance cycling facilities in and around Machynlleth. The new stands at the Station further supports and promotes other on-going projects in the town such as the 'Safer Routes To School' programme and the dual use cycle and pedestrian path from Machynlleth to Derwenlas."

Gerwyn Jones, on behalf of the CRP who co-ordinated the scheme, commented "With concerns about the environment, congestion and parking problems as well as personal health issues becoming more apparent people are looking for alternatives to the car – relatively modest projects like this can help facilitate and promote a modal shift from the car to healthier and more sustainable modes of travel.
