Cracking Carnival Cambria connects communities27/07/2009

Pictures from Carnival Cambria held on Saturday the 25th of July 2009.

It was a case of life imitating art on the Cambrian Coast on Saturday the 25th of July as the ‘cracking' Carnival Cambria event took centre stage.

The event, organised by Theatr Harlech, was inspired by Robert Graves's famous poem, ‘Welsh Incident', about ‘all sorts of queer things' coming out of the sea caves near Criccieth. 

A large number of local people were involved with the event which had included a series of workshops where an eclectic range of costumes were produced to bring the poem to life. On the Saturday the strange ‘things' of 2009 were unleashed on the towns of Barmouth, Harlech and Criccieth as part of three Grand Parades which included events at Harlech and Criccieth Castles.

Clare Williams from Theatr Harlech said of the event "We thought the poem by Robert Graves would be great for stimulating young minds in a creative way and by using the railway, which physically links the communities, as part of the event would help maintain old and develop new relationships and friendships between people of all ages".

Participants in costumes were afforded free train travel between the three Parades by Arriva Trains Wales who along with the Cambrian Railways Partnership (CRP) and others including Cyngor Gwynedd, communities first and CADW,  had supported the event.

Gerwyn Jones on behalf of the CRP commented "This has been a wonderful community event which has been enjoyed equally by locals and visitors. Clare and her colleagues from Theatr Harlech must be highly commended for their enthusiasm and hard work in realising this ambitious project which has by way of a fun and innovative event re-affirmed the connection between the communities on this part of the Cambrian Coast Railway Line'."
