Plaque to be unveiled, dedicated to Cambrian Railways pioneer

All residents and visitors are invited to attend the unveiling of a new heritage plaque at Newtown railway station on the 31st of August 2024 at 11am. The plaque will honour the significant contributions made by David Davies of Llandinam to the Cambrian Railways.

The event is organised by the Newtown Local History Group in association with the Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council, and the Mayor of Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn and is being held on the 165th anniversary of the opening of the first railway line in mid-Wales - the Llanidloes and Newtown Railway.

David Davies, born in 1818, played a pivotal role in the development of railways in Mid Wales. He established the first railway connection between Newtown and Llanidloes in 1859, despite these towns not being connected to any other railway at the time. He built over 145 miles of track and tackled major projects like the Talerddig cutting. Davies later became Managing Director of Cambrian Railways, with Llanidloes Station serving as its headquarters from 1864. Cambrian Railways eventually merged with the Great Western Railway in 1922. His work laid the foundation for further industrial developments in Wales.
